Sometimes I forget how easy life seems. I stay pretty lean throughout the year, so when I order one of the gargantuan entrees at The Cheesecake Factory, clean the plate and move on to the apple crisp with the 3 lbs. of whipped cream, I feel the eyes on me. I, however, have a diet where splurging is necessary.

All too often, powerlifters trying to make weight sacrifice their strength by dieting away hard-earned muscle along with body fat.
It’s no wonder, considering all the fad diets and cardio programs that somehow make their way into the weight loss programs of elite athletes who depend on strength and power.

Every bodybuilder/strength athlete has been told that during reduced calorie periods such as the precontest phase, they should take Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAA) multiple times a day to sustain muscle growth and prevent catabolism of muscle. The three BCAA—L-Leucine, L-Valine, and L-Isoleucine—have been heavily researched as a preventative, even therapeutic, measure to combat muscle-wasting diseases.

For as long as I can remember I have always wanted to have a body like you see on every fitness magazine cover. In my teenage years I dieted on and off and always had a love for working out. Around 2 years ago I started thinking about actually competing I was so excited to start my journey of training hard and sticking to a strict diet.
Unfortunately my journey did not start off right away as planned. I soon received the news that I was pregnant!

I write to all powerlifters, but I am always amazed to hear a drug-free lifter say that he can't train the Westside way. Although these lifters are going nowhere fast, they choose to use the progressive gradual overload method, going heavier and heavier each week. In most cases they stop making records and are stuck for years. Yet, they still choose not to use a more sophisticated method of training such as that used at Westside and presently used worldwide.

Oatmeal is a great fat burner and easy to cook, though it’s important to pay attention to the different brands because some have high sugar content. Another great fat burning food is a good old fashioned chicken breast. When purchasing, make sure the breasts have minimal fat. Breasts are usually the leanest, which is why I look for them first. Egg whites are also great for losing weight, plus an egg typically contains about 6 to 7 grams of protein. Brown rice is a proven fat burner and slow, starchy carbohydrate.

Years ago I used to be so focused on the scale and how much I weighed. I’ve since realized that the scale doesn’t mean anything in terms of your fitness. For some reason, guys can focus too heavily on their weight and think that number on the scale determines their level of muscularity and fitness. I remember weighing around 240 pounds a couple of years ago. I thought it was so cool to have 19-inch arms and a thick rounded face. Instead, what I had was the skinny complex. All guys have experienced this, and some still do.
