Stan was born November 6, 1967 in Portland, Oregon and graduated from Pennsylvania’s Cambria Heights High School in 1985. He had a college scholarship to play soccer for Warner Pacific College, but he chose the University of Oregon, where he studied Psychology. Stan has competed in bodybuilding since 1988, winning the Mr. Oregon in 1991, placing 6th in the Junior USA in 1992, and placing 2nd twice in the Emerald Cup, in 1996 and 1997. He began competing in powerlifting in 1996, totaling over 2000 lbs. in the Pepsi Region Eight challenge, deadlifting 782 lbs. raw.
In 1997, Stan stopped competing in both sports to pursue business opportunities.
But he never stopped lifting.
At the age of 38, Stan came back to bodybuilding and competed in the 2006 Seattle Emerald Cup, winning the Superheavyweight class weighing in at 235 lbs. In 2008 he won the Emerald Cup Heavyweight class and overall award.
In February 2009, at the age of 41, Stan totaled 2070 lbs. at the APA "All RAW" Northwest Regional Championships, setting 2 American records in the open category.
Stan earned his IFBB Pro Card in July 2009 winning the Superheavyweight class and overall award at the Masters Nationals Bodybuilding Championships weighing 259 lbs.
In September 2009, Stan entered an SPF Sanctioned Raw Powerlifting meet in California and totaled 2221 lbs. in the 275 lbs. category. That was just 29 lbs. away from the All-Time American Raw Record set in 1972 by Jon Cole. Stan squatted 821 lbs., benchpressed 606 pounds (earning him a place on the Raw bench hall of fame), and deadlifted 794 pounds. Stan is the #1 ranked raw powerlifter in America and the #3 ranked raw powerlifter in the world. 2221 lbs. is currently the highest raw total in the world in any weight class and federation.
